"Big J" to Grace PBA Opening

FORMER senator Sonny Jaworski, one of the pro league’s greatest 25 players, has been invited to grace the opening game of the PBA’s 36th season on Sunday featuring Barangay Ginebra and Meralco at the Araneta Coliseum.
The lone game, set at 6 p.m., kicks off the Philippine Cup and marks the first time the Kings, the undisputed crowd favorites, are playing on opening day. This is a rare occurrence because the pro league, assured of a traditionally large inaugural crowd, usually schedules the Kings on the next play date.

Big J
"Who can resist when you have the Big J there on opening day?" said Commissioner Chito Salud, referring to the former Meralco star during the MICAA days in the ‘70s who was immensely popular as Ginebra playing-coach in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
The traditional opening rites start at 4:15.
Officials of both clubs, meanwhile, have vowed to throw everything into the encounter, except their pension funds.
At the close of the three-day PBA planning session in Bangkok last Sept. 21, Kings alternate governor Robert Non and Bolts board representative Ramon Segismundo said their teams and their backers will come in full force for the match.
"Our employees wearing orange shirts will be there in full force," said Segismundo, adding: "We know Ginebra has a huge following, but we hope to also make our presence felt."
