MANILA, Philippines – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr. can finally get to trade punches with Mexican Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel but only after he overcomes his Ukrainian foe in December.
Top Rank, Inc. big boss Bob Arum assured that a Donaire-Montiel fight is in the works.
“We’ve got two bouts deals in place with Nonito and Fernando,” Arum told Michael Marley of Examiner.com.
“If both win their next bouts, then they will fight each other in the first quarter of next year on HBO,” he noted.
Donaire will clash with Wladimir Sidorenko (22-2-2, with 7 KOs) on December 4 at The Pond in Anaheim, California.
Montiel, meantime, is slated to fight October 30 at Centro de Convenciones, Cartagena, Colombia. His opponent has not yet been named.
The 27-year-old Donaire has 24 wins (with 16 knockouts) and 1 loss. He holds the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight title.
Montiel, 31, is the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight titles. He has 43 wins (22 KOs), 2 losses and 2 draws.
Both fighters are in the Ring Magazine Pound for Pound Ratings list as of September 23 with Donaire at No. 4 and Montiel at No. 8.
The list was topped by 7-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. – With reports from Examiner.com and Ring
