THE SAN MIGUEL Beermen taught the collegiate stars of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) a neat lesson in basketball marksmanship as they decimated the Cesafi selection, 79-61, in a charity game last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Between the helter-skelter moves of Alex Cabagnot to the quiet efficiency of Jay Washington and the solid perimeter game of Lordy Tugade, the Beermen simply imposed their will upon their younger opponents and established a gap that started with a 22-9 lead after the first period, and never became close after that.
The Cesafi team took a 4-0 lead early on but were suddenly humbled by the pros, who went on an 18-2 blitz behind the efforts of Arwind Santos, Cabagnot and Joseph Yeo. The lead ballooned to 15, 42-27, at the bend as Washington showcased his deadly offensive repertoire while Tugade shot in jumpers all over the court. Combined, Washington and Tugade accounted for half the Beermen's production in the second stanza.
The Cesafi stalwarts tried to make a game out of it in the second half but were not able to do so as they looked jittery and seemingly awestruck by their opponents. The Cesafi's lone beacon of hope was University of Cebu's tower of power, Junemar Fajardo, who battled down low against the Beermen's phalanx og big men that included two-time MVP Danny Ildefonso, the burly Dorian Pena and Mick Pennisi, on his way to a game-high 17 points.
The lead reached a high of 21 at 76-55 after two free-throws by Dennis Miranda as the Beermen cruised to the easy win. Tugade led the way for San Miguel with 13 points while Washington ended up with 11 markers. Dondon Hontiveros, arguably Cebu's most famous basketball player and a former ace of UC, was held down to just three points in limited minutes.
The Beermen will next take on the MEPZCEM selection today at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex. /correspondent jonas panerio
