Nike sidelines Reebok in new NFL apparel deal

CHICAGO - Nike Incorporated will replace rival Reebok as the official National Football League uniform supplier in 2012 as part of a deal involving seven apparel firms, the league announced Tuesday.

Without annoucning financial details of deals, the NFL said that as of April of 2012 its official clothing partners will be Nike, New Era Cap Company, Gill, VF Corporation, Under Armour Incorporated, '47 Brand and Outerstuff Limited.

"We have spent considerable time the past few years rigorously evaluating our apparel business," NFL executive vice president of ventures and business operations Eric Grubman said in a statement.

"The new framework will provide fans with a wider breadth of merchandise from global category leaders in the sports-licensed apparel industry."
Nike had previously supplied NFL uniforms in the 1990s, according to an announcement made at the league owners meetings.

"We believe our agreement with the NFL enhances the Nike brand and provides a significant opportunity to drive growth across the business - both in our performance products and sportswear," Nike Brand president Charlie Denson said.

New Era will handle on-field headwear while Gill and VF will handle fan gear and '47 Brand will manufacturer fan headwear. Outerstuff remains the NFL youth apparel maker while Under Armour remains sponsor of the NFL combine, which provides testing for top candidates for upcoming NFL Drafts.
Reebok was dropped after a 10-year deal with the NFL.

"Reebok has enjoyed a long and very successful NFL partnership," the firm owned by Adidas AG said in a statement. "We are extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish together."
