'Pacquiao a cross between Joe, Arnold & Elvis'

MANILA, Philippines – The Ring Magazine, considered by boxing aficionados as the “Bible of Boxing”, has given “Fighter of the Decade” and 7-division world champion Manny Pacquiao high marks in terms of talent, achievement, marketability, support system and growth potential.

The feature article, "The Ring All-Star Report Cards: Manny Pacquiao," which was originally published in the October edition of The Ring Magazine, said Pacquiao may go down in boxing history as “the most important fighter since the Muhammad Ali era.”

The feature was written by The Ring Magazine’s Don Stradley.

The Ring Magazine gave Pacquiao A+ in terms of achievements and marketability, citing the Filipino’s conquests inside the ring, particularly his 7 titles in 7 weight classes.
It also recognized Pacquiao’s pursuits in fields other than boxing.

“He has won boxing titles in seven weight divisions, including RING belts at featherweight, junior lightweight and junior welterweight, and was our Fighter of the Year three times. He’s had hit records on the Filipino pop charts, starred in Filipino movies and is currently holding a seat in the Filipino congress,” said Stradley.

“The poor boy from the streets of General Santos City grew up to be a cross between Joe Louis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, with a little bit of Elvis thrown in,” he added.

He said Pacquiao has transcended from just a mere boxing star to a recognizable international figure.
“You can’t turn on a TV set or walk past a billboard in the Philippines without seeing his face. Pacquiao enjoys a crossover appeal that [Floyd] Mayweather can only dream about,” said Stradley.

According to the Ring Magazine writer, Pacquiao also got straight A in terms of talent, support system and growth potential.

“He’s done it with a blazing-fast left hand, great footwork, a determination to win that is above anyone else’s in the game and a willingness to improve his technique,” said Stradley.

Stradley believes that Pacquiao will continue to fight despite his early retirement plan.

“Pacquiao, 31, has talked about cutting his career short to follow through on a promise he apparently made to his mother. Don’t count on it, though. He has at least several more big-money fights left in him.”
