Naturalization of Smart Gilas’ Douthit now up for Aquino’s signing

MANILA, Philippines—Marcus Douthit’s application for naturalization has been formally transmitted to Malacañang for President Aquino’s signature.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala said on Tuesday the 6-foot-10 American, a former LA Lakers draftee, could secure Filipino citizenship within 30 days after his application reached Mr. Aquino’s office on February 9.

“The President has 30 days to sign and make it official,” said Eala.

Mr. Aquino’s go-signal will be vital for the Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team, which is seeking nothing less than the crown in the Fiba Asia Championship in Wuhan, China, on September 15 to 25.

The champion in the tournament, where 15 other nations are participating, will clinch the lone slot for the continent in the 2012 Olympics.
