Nonito Donaire likely to face former Ukrainian champ

The Filipino Flash

MANILA, Philippines – Super flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will likely face a former world champion from Ukraine in an undercard to a Miguel Cotto fight in December.

In a report posted on Boxing Scene.com, Top Rank Inc. chief Bob Arum, said Donaire is likely to be pitted against Wladimir Sidorenko, a former World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight champion.

The Donaire-Sirodenko fight will be under the double header that features Cotto and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in separate matches.

Cotto will be defending his WBA junior middleweight title against either fellow Puerto Rican Kermit Cintron or Armenian-American Vanes Martirosyan.

Mexico’s Chavez Jr. will defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) silver middleweight title versus Polish boxer Pawel Wolak.

The Donaire-Sirodenko has quelled speculations of an impending fight between the Filipino and Mexican bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel.

Donaire earlier said that he wanted to face Montiel, who holds the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and WBC bantamweight titles.

However, it seems that the Mexican champion is unwilling to be on the same ring with him.

“With them, parang umiiwas sila. Parang ayaw nilang mangyari ‘yun. Depende lang talaga but I’m willing to fight the best out there,” Donaire said in an earlier interview.

“At least I had my pride in getting that fight to happen,” he added.
